The Starlink Field Guide: Using Starlink While Traveling & Camping
We've spent the past 3 years traveling Starlink, using it while traveling, camping, and working. We learned a lot the hard way and wanted to share what we've learned in our Starlink Field Guide - 60 pages of everything you need to know to get the most out of Starlink during your own adventures.
Starlink is one of our favorite pieces of gear that we travel with on our overlanding adventures as we explore dirt roads, camp, hike, and paddle. We use Starlink in a variety of situations including staying in touch with family and friends, planning adventures for the coming days and weeks, downloading offline maps, making camping and outfitter reservations, remote work and meetings, and for a variety of repairs and emergencies.
Traveling with a Starlink might not seem desirable if you like getting away from it all and “disconnect”. Indeed, one of the reasons we enjoy overlanding is getting out there into the outdoors and living a simpler life. And yet, we’ve found that using our Starlink intentionally and finding our balancing of turning it on or off has enabled us to travel more often on longer and further trips than we could without it mixing remote work and play. There are still large portions of the world without high-speed cell coverage or any cell coverage at all, and we appreciate having the option of using our Starlink in these places.
Tips, Tricks, and Recommendations
Whatever your form of adventure, we think Starlink is a useful tool to know about and consider for your own travels and adventures. But it can be hard to keep up with all the things you need to know about Starlink as it’s a quickly evolving technology with frequent changes including availability, hardware, service plans, costs, and accessories. And there are a lot of tips and tricks we’ve learned from our own experience that aren’t necessarily obvious or well-known. That’s why we decided to create this Starlink Field Guide in addition to our Starlink YouTube videos to help you decide if Starlink is right for you and get the most from Starlink if you decide to get one.
